Coronavirus: Marouane Fellaini confirmed as Chinese Super League’s first positive

  • Chinese Super League reported to start suspended season in April but Belgian’s Covid-19 confirmation might delay kick-off
  • Former Manchester United midfielder returned to China via Singapore after trips to Belgium, Morocco and Maldives
  • Former Manchester United midfielder Marouane Fellaini has tested positive for the coronavirus, according to a statement from the Belgian’s Chinese Super League side Shandong Luneng.
It had been reported by Chinese media that a Shandong player had tested positive and it was rumoured to be Fellaini before being confirmed by the club on Sunday. He is reported to be asymptomatic.
Fellaini travelled from Singapore to Shanghai Pudong International Airport before taking a taxi to the city’s Hongqiao Railway Station from where he took a high-speed train to Jinan, Shandong province. He was tested on arrival in Jinan. All of this was reported by Jinan health authorities.
At the start of the year, Fellaini was training with his teammates in Guangzhou and then Dubai, where they arrived on January 28. He scored all of his team’s goals in their four warm-up matches during this period.
After the foreign players were dismissed from training in Dubai on February 20, he is reported to have travelled to Belgium, Morocco and the Maldives before returning to China on March 19. In the meantime, the Chinese members of the team travelled to China on February 21 and have been isolated.
Now that it has been confirmed, Fellaini becomes the first Chinese Super League player to test positive. The result puts the expected start to the new season in doubt.
